What is Personal Coaching?

Coaching is a focused conversation between the coach and the client.

Coaching is about getting the very best out of the client and enabling them to make decisions that will improve their life. Simplistically, the role of the coach is to support the client in achieving their goals.

Coaching should not to be confused with counselling or guidance. The coach does not have the answers to the client’s issues and it is not the coach’s job to go over old ground or be a source of information. Their job is to focus on the future and work with the client to help them find the answers themselves. All the achievements that people get through coaching are a result of their own actions – a coach never suggests the answers, they guide clients to find the answers for themselves.

Coaching techniques can be applied to just about any part of life, personal and professional. Some typical reasons why a client may wish to work with a coach are:

  • To build confidence and self belief.
  • Help making decisions about getting back to work - what to do and how to keep motivated during the process.
  • Building better relationships – personal and professional
  • Finding personal peace of mind.
  • A general desire to ‘get sorted’.

Coaching is based on a shared feeling of trust and empathy between the client and the coach. The relationship is based on equality: It is certainly not a teacher/pupil relationship. The focus is on the future while acknowledging the present and the effects of the past. The client must have a willingness to work through challenging issues towards empowerment, self-confidence and a happier, more productive life. There is an absolute belief in the client’s ability to accept themselves and make changes that will improve their lives.

Coaching is about getting the best out of people by helping them to focus on what they can control rather than dwelling on things that they cannot. The interactions are all client-focused that is, they are focused on the issues that the client wants to address rather than working to a set agenda.

How does it work?

On a practical level, the coach and client set up a series of telephone calls at mutually agreeable times, typically weekly or fortnightly. Each call lasts around 50 minutes. The client only needs access to a quiet space with a telephone, and paper and pen to take notes.

During the first couple of sessions the coach will help the client to look at their whole life situation, their plans and desires for the future and then help them to decide the main things to work on that will make a real, positive difference. In subsequent sessions, the client will bring along a specific issue to work on that will help build towards their larger goals. The client makes progress through taking action so, within each session, the client will decide on one or more actions to take that will move them in the direction that they want to go. The client is encouraged to complete these actions before the next session. These individual actions can be quite small in themselves but build towards the bigger picture. The client learns that they can take control and do things to improve their life situation.

The coach’s role during each session is mainly questioning and listening to guide the client into making decisions about their way forward. The coach will help the client to set realistic but challenging goals.

Coaching by telephone is highly effective and has a number of benefits:

  • Removes the difficulty of travelling to a support centre – the client can stay at home or other convenient location for them.
  • Some clients are unhappy working face-to-face – some people prefer the anonymity of the telephone.
  • One-off, ‘top-up’ sessions can be easily arranged after the initial series of sessions.
  • Timing issues – Sessions can be scheduled during the daytime or evening to suit the client’s preference.
  • Saves travelling time and expense.

Rather than rushing into a solution, we will help you to examine your values – those things that are of fundamental importance to you. By understanding your values you can choose options for the future that sit well with you as a whole person and therefore lead to greater contentment. Together we will look at the options that are open to you and, once you have a better understanding of where you are now and where you want to go, we can set an achievable action plan to get you there.

The coaching contract will usually be for 8 - 12, 50 minute sessions which can be extended if necessary. My preference is to start with weekly sessions and then after the concentrated action of the first 3 - 4 sessions, many clients find it possible to drop to fortnightly or even monthly sessions as they learn that they can take control of their own situation. We can, of course, discuss other options to suit you. Sessions can be held during the daytime or evening to fit in with your schedule.

A programme of coaching sessions is appropriate if you are wanting to make significant changes in your life. However, if you are just needing help on a smaller issue that you are stuck with, I offer one off coaching sessions.
